In this time period, Western Europe felt the catastrophic effects of the fall of Rome. It became a backwater for much of this period. Feudalism was the main form of government because centralization was hard to achieve. The Crusades would lead up to Western Europe regaining much of the knowledge that had been lost to them. Eventually this would lead up to the Italian Renaissance.
